What we’re looking at over here is the electoral map from the 1988 U.S. presidential election, featuring Republican candidate George H. W. Bush and Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis. Bush dominated the race, securing 426 electoral votes and winning nearly the entire nation—like, just look at all this red. Meanwhile, Dukakis only managed to scrape together 111 electoral votes.
Some argue that this photo op of Dukakis riding in a tank didn’t do him any favors. But I don’t know—while he wasn’t exactly seen as a military-type leader, you could say this rugged shot sends the opposite message. Nothing says ‘I’m strong on national defense’ quite like having your name neatly labeled on your helmet.
Regardless, despite Bush carrying 40 states to Dukakis’s 10, the popular vote margin wasn’t as overwhelming as the map makes it seem. Bush received 48,886,597 votes, while Dukakis trailed with 41,809,476 votes—we’re talking a difference of just 7.7%
