Jimmie Grier and His Greater All-Star Cocoanut Grove Orchestra play "(You Knew You'd Hurt Somebody) Why Did It Have To Be Me?" (Bud Green-Carmen Lombardo-Sam H. Stept), featuring a fabulous full chorus alto sax solo probably by James Briggs and a vocal by Margaret Lawrence. Great hot playing by one of the trumpeters throughout too - would this be Holzhaus, Cohen or someone else entirely?
Walter Holzhaus and Bernard Cohen - trumpets/ Homer Menge - trombone/ James Briggs and Frank Schumacher - alto saxes (one doubles on baritone sax)/ Art Grier - tenor sax/ Dick Webster, Weiner Callies and Dwight Muma - violins/ ?Toni Travers - accordion/ Hal Chanslor - piano, celeste/ Richard Ebrecke - guitar/ Paul King - string bass/ William Madeas - drums/ Margaret Lawrence - vocals
This comes from an existing transfer which I've cleaned up to the best of my ability, so I apologise for the poor sound.
Jimmie Grier appears to have taken over Gus Arnheim's Orchestra at the Cocoanut Grove in November 1931. He remained there until May 1932, when Phil Harris' Orchestra took over. During this time, he recorded eight commercial sides for Victor, of which only one is of any jazz interest. In addition to this, he cut at least thirty 15 minute radio transcription discs for the Transco company, showcasing the band as a highly diverse one, capable of putting over hot numbers as good as any! Transco also recorded dozens of discs by 'Slim Martin's Transco All-Americans' (Abe Lyman?), Gus Arnheim, Phil Harris and Ted Fio Rito.
Recorded in the Freeman Lang Studios, Hollywood, during c. early 1932
