As part of the EU project “EcoMobility,” VIRTUAL VEHICLE conducted test drives in collaboration with TNO and Valeo. The test scenario: Four connected vehicles on the highway are to make way for an emergency vehicle – which is also connected – so that it can pass much faster than would otherwise be possible without centralized traffic coordination.
TNO contributed a joint model, while Valeo provided the TCUs for equipping five test vehicles. VIRTUAL VEHICLE supplied its trajectory optimizer and organized the test drives.
The use of fast 5G communication and cost-effective, high-precision GPS receivers now makes it possible to create a virtual representation of the situation on the road. Sensors, which are usually already present in modern vehicles, detect the vehicle's surroundings and thus also include non-connected vehicles in the situation picture.
A central dispatch unit, known as the Road Supervisor, optimizes traffic and distributes recommendations – primarily target speed and lane changes – to all monitored vehicles. Ultimately, the driver — or, in the case of autonomous vehicles, the local vehicle control system — has the final decision to follow the recommendation or reject it for safety reasons.
This complex demonstrator setup, which coordinated five vehicles on the highway, was not only a major technical challenge—it was also very rewarding to see the end results of months, even years, of work.
