American mountaineering legend Tom Hornbein describes the 1940s, First ascents of Zumie's Thumb, Prospect Park area. He met Clarence Zumwalt and other old climbers that pioneered rock and ice climbing in Rocky Mountain National Park. They used wool, manila ropes and other gear. Tom describes taking a fall on the Thimble and Thumb before the age of modern harnesses. This is part one of Estes Park Climbing History topic. Tom Hornbein amazed the world in 1963 after his success climbing the West Ridge on Mount Everest, however in our interviews he talks about the day to day life of a climber, and exploration on Longs Peak. The history of climbing in Rocky Mountain National Park on Longs Peak is a key part of the history of rock climbing in America. Climbers from the PNW, California, Wyoming, and the East met and mingled in Colorado.
