‘Writing history from Venice’ was part of a 14-week course on ‘Conversations with the canon’, presented at the University of Pretoria in 2023.
Medieval Venice – an eastward-looking city - was once a ‘west of the east’. In recent years and for a very different world, an international art/architecture cultural exhibition, The Venice Biennale, sought to turn the city's cultural face southward – as a kind of ‘north of the south’.
Yet speaking to us from across the centuries, in global history Venice remains a site of critical historical significance. Emerging from a world before our post/colonial one, Venice presents a question to its historical canons and narratives. The city represents a rich and tangible epistemic site through which the canon can be revisited, and so laying grounds for new contemporary conversations and directions for today.
Two key works discussed in the lecture are Deborah Howard’s ‘Venice and the East’ (2000) and Benedikt Koehler’s ‘Early Islam and the Birth of Capitalism’ (2014).
