In this video, we capture a rare sight: an out-of-service R68A Q train passing through Newkirk Avenue with an open side door—an extremely uncommon occurrence on the NYC Subway. Earlier in its run, this train experienced a malfunction where a door failed to close properly at a station stop, preventing the train from being able to leave the station due to built-in safety interlocks. Due to strict safety protocols and electronic interlocks, NYC Subway trains are not permitted (nor able) to operate in passenger service if a door remains open.
Once the door operator mechanism froze, the MTA's control center and dispatchers responded swiftly and professionally. The train was immediately removed from service, and dispatchers expertly coordinated service interventions to minimize delays for riders and keep other trains flowing around the incident. In this clip, we see the disabled train being moved out of the way and back to the yard for repairs, with an MTA employee stationed at the affected door to ensure safety. A very well-executed operation, handled quite professionally!
The MTA’s incident response procedures in situations like these are highly developed and executed with impressive precision. International peer agencies often cite the MTA’s protocols, particularly for mechanical and service disruptions, as examples of globally recognized best practices in transit operations. Enjoy!
