Team Welcome to another episode of Asktop.net, sponsored by MentorMilitary.com. I am your host Command Sergeant Major Retired Mark Gerecht. Today we are going to discuss how to handle Soldier complaints or concerns. I have also placed some links below to some resources that can assist you in helping your Soldiers.

As leaders we find ourselves handling Soldiers complaints or concerns on a weekly basis. After all being a problem solver is part of our job.
In my opinion the key to solving problems or concerns comes down to using a two-approach concept.
Start by asking the Soldier the following question: Do you want me to do something, in which case I need to take notes; or do you want to vent; in which case I can sit back and listen. The choice is yours.
If they want you to do something you need to take notes and ask the Soldier what they would like to see happen or in their opinion what is the solution they would like to see.
Conversely if they don’t want you to do anything but simply want to be heard…sit back and listen. Take notes if something important surfaces that might be illegal, unethical, immoral, or unsafe, but in general just listen.
I have found that 9 times out of 10 Soldiers just need to vent. Once they vent and get it off their chest, they feel better. Sometimes during the course of venting they find their own solution to the problem…which is a positive outcome. Other times you might need to ask some open-ended questions to help the Soldier discover a solution. The key is to do more listening then talking. You have 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason. Listen twice as much as you speak.
Bottom-line sometimes we all need to vent and usually feel better afterwards. Give your Soldiers a safe space to vent. Notice I said vent, not whine. There is a significant difference between whining and venting. Venting is a process that can diffuse a situation, whining for the sake of whining solves nothing and is not productive.
