The Hanseatic city of Roermond has belonged to the duchy of Guelders for many centuries and remains the seat of the bishop of Limburg to this day. Brimming with cultural and historical artefacts, the city centre has been designated as a conservation area. The municipality boasts a wealth of listed buildings such as churches and guild houses, its skyline dominated by the St. Christopher Cathedral, dating back to the 15th Century and the Munster Church, built in the 13th Century. Also well worth a look are the "Stadhuis", the city hall from 1700, and the "Minderbroederskerk" (The Franciscan Friars' Church). At the heart of this city steeped in history, visitors will discover a wide range of shops and charming squares. These and the many cosy terraces and picturesque restaurants enhance the inviting character of the centre of Roermond.
The Designer Outlet Roermond is an Outlet Center of the British company McArthurGlen and offers 200 international designer brands. The center is located on the edge of the Roermond city center and was opened in November 2001. With more than 8 million visitors per year (2018), it is one of the largest attractions in the Netherlands.
The Designer Outlet Roermond is located in a number of buildings of the former Ernst Casimir barracks. These barracks were inaugurated in 1939 and served as shelter for a number of border battalions, which, according to the Minister of War, were deemed necessary with the increasing threat of war from Germany. In 1940, the German Wehrmacht occupied the barracks, which were finally abandoned by the Dutch army in 1992. After that, the buildings will house asylum seekers for a few years, until most of the buildings are demolished in 2000. At the end of 2001, a shopping center of the British company McArthurGlen will be built on the site, which will open the first Outlet Center in the Netherlands - especially for branded goods - in Roermond. The arrival of the center in Roermond caused a lot of commotion, especially among shopkeepers in the city centre. They feared major competition and feared that visitors to the center would ignore the city centre. The first phase of the brand village consisted of approximately 70 shops. In 2005, construction began on phase 2, a series of 60 stores in pseudo-Amsterdam style. In 2008, the brand village had approximately 120 shops and almost all spaces were rented. The center welcomed more than 2.9 million visitors annually. A third expansion phase was completed in September 2011. This phase provided 7,000 m² of additional floor space, increasing the retail area to 35,000 m². In terms of number of stores, the shopping center will grow from 113 to 150 stores. From 2011, Roermond is home to the largest outlet center in the Benelux and Germany. In mid-2018, the outlet center has 186 stores and 25 restaurants, according to their own website.
