Strait of Hormuz Still Shut: Iran's Reopening Offer & Mine Claims Explainedvideo

The Strait of Hormuz — the world's most important oil chokepoint — remains effectively closed, with ship traffic down to about 2 vessels a day from 85 before the crisis (IMF PortWatch).

This weekend, Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed an oil tanker struck a naval mine and caught fire in the strait — its third such claim since Friday. No maritime authority has confirmed any of them.

On the diplomatic track, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday the strait could reopen within days if the US accepts a ceasefire proposal: ending the naval blockade and lifting sanctions on Iranian oil. Washington has not accepted.

Britain's UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reports at least 10 vessels attacked in or near the strait in the past week. Brent crude is trading above $100 a barrel.
