Confidence can be a dangerous thing in van life. Today, I finally felt secure enough to remove my old backup heater—only to have my main diesel heater fail on me just hours later. It’s a cold reminder of how quickly things can change when you live on the road in a New England winter.
Before the heater trouble started, I had a productive day visiting the local food pantry and working on one of my massage clients. I managed to squeeze in a sunset hike along an abandoned, overgrown railroad track near my office, capturing some incredible drone footage of the wetlands before hiking back in the dark. But as I settled in for the night, the error codes started, and I’m back in my zero-degree sleeping bag.
