How do you go about perfecting a #pitchdeck that will impress #investors?
Xavier Ballester, AIN's Director of Brokerage explains what he has learnt from looking at pitch decks for over a decade.
Pitch decks.
So your pitch deck is one of your key tools for finding #investment. It helps investors analyse you and your business, how do you go about perfecting it? My name is Xavier Ballester, I work for Angel Investment Network. And this is our angel Academy series, I'll be looking at five to 10 pitch decks every day for the last 10 years or so I don't know what investors are looking for and know what they're not looking for. So welcome to our guide on how to get it just right.
So your title slide should just be your logo, and the name of the company on a nicely branded background. Some people like to put explanation, but we like to keep it simple. It's about first impression. So make sure it looks really good and stands up. Next up, it's about the problem that you're solving. Just keep it concise and human. You don't need statistics at this stage, the solution? So how are you actually resolving the problems that you've laid out? It's about keeping it succinct and understandable. Get that emotional buy in from the investor.
Some entrepreneurs have far too close their business and go way too deep or way too technical. Keep it understandable. Don't make that mistake. The middle few slides deal with the nitty gritty, you've established that emotional connection. Now it's about proving how your story works, and how it's going to make money. The magic.
So what makes your idea unique. Use your imagination here, you're in the best position to give that wow factor and why this is the business that it is. So you should include testimonials. And also really good visuals at this stage, really make a jump off the page. If you've got an idea, now you've got to show how it works, how you're going to actually monetize this.
This is the bit where you show who's paying you what distribution channels, your margins, all of that good stuff. It's also a great opportunity to highlight any deals you've already struck. Investors will also want to know that you've got a cost effective strategy for reaching your target audience. Show them the roadmap about how you're going to implement it. Think about cost of acquisition, lifetime value of customers, all these things are really important. Show that you've done your research.
Every company however, niche has got competition. This is where you set that out. Now make sure that you show what makes you stand out from the competition without denigrating them. And your pitch with confirming how your business works and why investors should back them. In this section, investors should be left with no doubt about the potential value of your business is the team not the product that makes a business an entrepreneur turns ideas into money. It's about showing that your team has marketing experience and expertise across the board. Success breeds success.
Now it's time for three to five year graph on your projections, you simple numbers, use the revenues at the top, then your costs. And then at the bottom, the EBIT da. It's about being concise, and it's easy to understand.
Wild optimism will impress no one. So this is the point where you prove to investors that what you're actually building is real impressive with some hard evidence, social media reach users, revenues, anything that will prove the growing popularity of your business. Finally, investors expect to be asked for money. So this is where you outline how much you need, what you're going to use it for how much you're going to give them of the business, all the financials nicely put together at the end. So there you go.
