Challenge: Eat Flak (suggested by Cybruiser57Péter)
Goal: Complete a map in TSE with a big Reptiloid count on Serious Difficulty, without saving or loading, and eliminating all enemies.
Stipulation: You can only counter Reptiloids (Highlander and the Bride are also counted), their projectiles and all aerial targets with the shotguns. Laser and Explosive weapons are restricted.
I'm back in Serpent Yards already? What gives? Well, this Challenge gives, being able to only counter those testicle-vomiting pests with the shotguns leads to some seriously tedious situations when you remember what game we're playing.
The Second Encounter was built with the Sniper Rifle in mind (a weapon which will be receiving a lot of the attention in the next challenge). As such, a common occurrence in enemy placement would be an Arachnoid or Reptiloid perched on a faraway tower, taking potshots on the unsuspecting player. A majority of maps in TSE place Reptiloids in advantageous positions like this, which makes the shotguns-for lack of a better term-inherently useless.
Let me give you a basic rundown on how Shotguns in the average FPS function:
Short Range: All pellets have the high chance of making contact with the target, dealing maximum damage.
Medium Range: Roughly half of the pellets will land on their target, the remaining spread away from the center of your crosshair.
Long Range: The pellets physically alter their direction in the wind to avoid hitting any living target in existence.
That's pretty much the jist of how it feels to use a Shotgun at long range. Any other map I attempted to perform in simply had too many Reptiloids on Sniper towers to even make this challenge beatable. Now, the only time where the Shotgun pellet spread is not detrimental to one's survival is when you're fighting Highlanders, as these hulking beasts are about the size of an average office building. And I face two of them using the shotguns (remembering to save the Serious Damage powerup for one of them this time)!
As for other aerial targets, the Shotguns are considered by the game to be good alternatives when fighting Harpies. I disagree. When I need an emergency weapon for Harpies invading my personal space, it's Knife or bust.
In the end, I did not manage to locate all enemies within the map, and my excuse is that I don't even know if they exist. I hunted for as many monsters as I could recall. If anyone has an idea of where the extra mooks are cowering in fear, kindly inform me in the comments section below.
