Jax, the Grandmaster at Arms
Jax, whose full name is Saijax Cail-Rynx Icath'un, is a legendary warrior from the fallen empire of Icathia. His story is one of a profound personal loss intertwined with a relentless quest to find warriors capable of facing an unimaginable cosmic threat: the Void.
Born and raised in Icathia when it was a satrapy of the Shuriman empire, Jax grew up hearing tales from his father of a proud, independent nation that existed before Shuriman oppression. He learned of the Kohari, heroic figures who once defended Icathia and its Mage King. This instilled in him a deep sense of national pride and a simmering resentment towards Shurima's dominion.
Saijax committed himself to the study of arms, learning from both Shurima's weapons masters and his own clan's elders. He became a master of virtually every weapon imaginable, showcasing an unparalleled aptitude for combat.
However, the fate of Icathia took a catastrophic turn. An earthquake revealed something ancient and terrible beneath the earth – a source of power that the Icathian mages believed could finally free them from Shuriman rule. Saijax was tasked with protecting these mages as they tried to harness this power, but what they unearthed was not a liberator, but the monstrous, reality-devouring entity known as the Void.
The unleashing of the Void devastated Icathia, turning it into a twisted, chaotic wasteland. Saijax was among the few survivors, witnessing the horrifying destruction of his homeland and the transformation of his people into unspeakable abominations. In the aftermath of this tragedy, he picked up a unique stave, which came to be known as the "last light of Icathia," imbued with a fragment of elemental fire.
Grieving and ashamed of what his people had wrought, Saijax Cail-Rynx Kohari Icath'un forsook his old name and became known simply as Jax. He embarked on a solitary journey, wandering across Runeterra and beyond, a vagabond warrior whose life was unnaturally prolonged by the elemental fire he carried. Yet, the further he strayed from the remnants of Icathia, the weaker the flame within his stave became, threatening to extinguish completely.
This realization brought him to a grim conclusion: he could not outrun his past. His duty was to return and fight. While the initial advance of the Void was halted by the last surviving Ascended, the singular threat still endures.
For centuries, Jax has roamed, not seeking personal glory, but searching for warriors strong enough to rebuild the Kohari and stand alongside him against the inevitable return of the Void. He has faced countless skilled, courageous, and powerful beings, yet none have truly convinced him they possess the strength and resolve needed to confront the looming darkness. His iconic choice to fight with a lamppost, rather than a "real" weapon, is a testament to his overwhelming skill and his underlying hope that he might one day find opponents worthy of his true strength – a strength he reserves for the ultimate battle.
