SOAP & WATER - PART B
DJJohnny has been continuing his history of Bank Quay, in Warrington, this time looking at soap manufacturing. Joseph Crosfield & Sons, and Lever Brothers - the names of the original soap making companies at Bank Quay, have been on the site for over 200 years and have a rich history that is summarised in this video. This is the second (Part B) of two parts, called “Soap and Water”, that summarises Soap and Chemical manufacture at Bank Quay. This video looks at the rivalry between Joseph Crosfield and William Lever - who set up a soapary next door, on the banks of the river Mersey, in the 19th century. It also looks at the changes that took place for each company, over the years and how they have emerged as multinational organisations for the 21st century - Unilever and PQ Corporation. The video also looks at Crosfields’ during the war years, where women were used to keep the factory going when the men went to war. Finally, it looks at Warrington’s famous Transporter Bridge, that Crosfields’ built, when they extended their factory over the water. I would like to thank Culture Warrington (Warrington Museum, Art Gallery and Library) for their continued help in making these short videos and images used. Thanks also to Warrington Memories Facebook group for images & information and in particular to Alan Barton and Sean Clemo. I would also like to thank Alison McConnell and Barry Lawson for their great help, all of which is very much appreciated.
