Otterbox cases in general are tough and durable. Otterbox cases are larger than the average iPhone 7 case that I've reviewed but they are some of the easiest cases to get since you can find them at all the big box electronics store.
Otterbox has a GREAT deal on cases right now! 20% off! Use this link: https://mreh.ca/OtterboxJuly2019 (expires July 19, 2019)
So the question is, if you're looking to get an Otterbox case and your'e standing in the store, get the Defender if you feel the need to wear your iPhone on your belt and throw your iPhone 40 ft into the air. Get the Commuter if you need something slimmer and you work in dusty environments. The Symmetry is a good all around case but doesn't handle as well. But that might not matter since you can get custom prints on it. The Statement is basically a clear symmetry with a fancy strip of leather at the bottom that works well in jacket pockets. The Statement also handles better than the Symmetry.
If you're wondering, I've given the Otterbox Defender a score of 4 Ehs out of 5, the Commuter 3.9 he’s out of 5, the Statement 3.8 Eh’s out of 5 and the Symmetry a score of 3.7 Ehs’ out of 5.

When it comes to protection, the extra size and multiple layers of the Otterbox Defender will definitely protect your iPhone from high drops and the belt clip will ensure that you can easily access your iPhone off your belt.
Now despite the "tough" persona of the Defender, you'll want to take the case apart every once in a while because dust is going to be an issue. My biggest concern is going to be the dust on the front of the iPhone.
Another downside in terms of wear and tear that I've seen is the TPU sleeve stretching out over time and the plugs getting torn off after a while.
The best part of the Commuter are certain handling aspects and the extra protection it offers your iPhone. I would put the Commuter between the Defender and Symmetry in terms of protection.
Now the extra protection it offers your iphone comes at a cost in terms of size. The commuter is a large case. The Commuter is thicker, wider and the edges of the screen are a little harder to access when compared to the Symmetry and Defender.
The last thing I will say about the Commuter is that dust and debris will have a higher chance of collecting along the TPU only portions of the case. Those portions aren’t as rigid and have a bit of give to them.
The Otterbox Symmetry is a solid feeling case. In fact, the iPhone feels safer in the Symmetry than the Defender and Commuter since nothing comes apart. I did a video with Sarah Remmer, a mommy blogger and she's personally seen her iPhone survive being tossed by her toddler.
The front of the Symmetry handles quite well so if your hands are large enough, you'll be able to have a great grip on the iPhone. The buttons of the case are easy to use and the Symmetry comes in many designs. For me, the biggest selling point of the Symmetry is knowing that I can have a custom printed iphone case that can handle any accidental day-to-day drop.
The biggest downside of the Symmetry from my perspective is the slick back. It handles like a wet bar of soap if you don't have a good grip on your iPhone. The edges are slick so picking up your iPhone with the face down might take a couple of tries. The extra width of the case will also make the iPhone 7 Plus exceptionally large which might be an issue for some.
Onto the Otterbox Statement. The Statement is basically a Clear Symmetry with a tiny bit of leather on the back. With that being said, the rubbery edges of the statement are more pronounce which means picking up an iPhone face first is easier. The leather covered bottom also sits better in your hand so one-handed usage is decent.
The only downsides of the Statement is that the clear back will scratch over time despite being marketed as scratch resistant. The size of the case also increase the bulk of the iPhone 7 plus so if you’ve got smaller hands, you might want to shy away from this case.
