Despite its name, this piece has no Native American associations. It was actually written while the composer was travelling by train to Hiawatha, Kansas in 1901, and the piece was named after the town. It became a huge hit, and was played by the Sousa band. 'Neil Moret' was actually Charles Daniels (1878-1943), who also wrote under the names Jules Lemare, L'Albert, Paul Bertrand, Julian Strauss, and Sidney Carter (when writing lyrics).
