From UCLA Life Science 15 student Nicholas Shane comes The Drug Games. Five districts, one winner. First, there's District 1. With reduced anxiety from mimicking GABA, this tribute will be calmed (0:14) due to neurons being kept from being fired.
Additionally, they will have energized feelings (0:18) as low doses increase dopamine release. Pain will be blocked as endorphin release will block the pain messages across neuron pathways. And there will be increased contentment from the increased activity of serotonin receptors, and it impairs her functioning due to the blocking of glutamate, causing symptoms such as slurred speech and reduced coordination.
In District 2, we have the Caffeine District. In this district, caffeine mimics adenosine, keeping its competitor awake and allowing them to keep their pathways open even when they should be feeling tired. This will obviously be of huge benefit.
District 3, the Adderall District. In this district, Adderall increases the release of adrenaline and dopamine, and blocks the reuptake of adrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin, and inhibits monoamine oxidase, which is an enzyme that breaks down dopamine. This, all in all, when taken properly, will help this competitor be much more focused and help this tribute along its way to victory.
District 4 is the OxyContin District. In this district, OxyContin mimics an opium-like neurotransmitter in pain neurons, blocking their function, making it so that this tribute does not feel pain and can push through no matter what, although it is highly addictive.
In District 5, it is the LSD District. In this district, LSD binds to serotonin receptors, increasing their sensitivity. All in all, this decreases activity in the brain, causing both visual and auditory hallucinations, sure to make this game very interesting.
