What does Ted Williams mean when he says hitters should be guessing?
He doesn’t mean it’s literally a shot in the dark. He means formulate an educated plan for what you should look to hit. This can be based on:
What is the pitcher throwing? What patterns do they have? Are they pounding the strike zone? Starting everyone in first then finishing away? Or the example Ted gives here, he had no idea how he missed the ball, but the pitcher seemed antsy to throw that pitch again. Read the pitcher!
So many things are given away by the pitcher, defense, etc that if you pay attention to can really help you improve your chances of being successful.
