(20 Oct 1978) Preliminary construction began on Saturday (21 oct) on itaipu, the world's largest hydro-electric dam, following the 60-ton dynamite blast on Friday that diverted the waters of the Parana river from their centuries-old riverbed on the Brazil-Paraguay border. Presidents Ernesto Geisel of Brazil and Alfredo Stroessner of Paraguay attended the ceremony.
