When he painted this odd Nativity scene, Botticelli believed he was living through The Great Tribulation, a precursor to the apocalypse. Florence, Milan, and Naples were all in complete political turmoil after being taken over by the French — and that was all before everyone was swept up in a religious fervor brought on by a popular zealot (including the artist himself!) It makes for a dark, brooding Christmas painting that includes demons crawling out from Hell.
