Under the "Compassionate Release" statute, ALC Attorney Rupalee Rashatwar brought home elder and client Bradford Gamble in March 2022. Gamble had spent 46 years in prison and was diagnosed with late-stage cancer before he was released home to his family. In this video, Rashatwar and Gamble discuss the cruel reality of the so-called Compassionate Release Statute, asking: "Where is the compassion?"
On August 14, 2022, Gamble passed away peacefully as a free man. Up until his final moments, he spoke out against the abusive practices, laws, and treatment of our incarcerated elders. Currently, about 10,000 elders are sentenced to die in Pennsylvania prisons. Bills SB835 and HB2347 would provide parole eligibility for people over the age of 55 who have served either 25 years or half of their sentence---whichever is shorter. If these bills had been in effect, Gamble might have been able to come home long before he was diagnosed with cancer.
Join Straight Ahead and the Coalition to Abolish Death by Incarceration in Harrisburg on September 20 to demand that legislators pass these bills to bring home our loved ones and community members serving death by incarceration. Register at: bit.ly/CADBIrally920.
