What is a Prompt? A prompt is simply the input text you give to an AI model (like ChatGPT, gemini, etc) to get a useful response. Think of it like asking a question or giving instructions. For example, telling a friend “write a poem about rain” is a prompt. In AI, a prompt guides the model to produce the output you want. It can include the task, background context, examples, and instructions.
Why prompt engineering?
The quality of the AI’s answer depends a lot on the prompt. Vague prompts tend to produce guesswork or generic answers, while detailed prompts yield precise results. For instance, “without context, even a tiny model is lost; with strong context, even a small model can perform well”. Poor prompts can cause AI to make mistakes or hallucinate facts. By contrast, good prompts reduce ambiguity and help the model focus on what you really want
