After 40 days away from home, the University of Hawaiʻi men’s volleyball team returned to Bankoh Arena on Wednesday night, opening a two-match series with a four set win over longtime rival BYU.
The third-ranked Rainbow Warriors hosted No. 6 BYU in the first meeting between the two programs in Mānoa since the 2020 season — and the matchup lived up to the anticipation.
Outside hitter Louis Sakanoko provided an early spark for Hawaiʻi, finishing with 15 kills and four aces as the Rainbow Warriors carried a two-sets-to-one lead into the fourth set.
All-American setter Tread Rosenthal orchestrated the offense down the stretch, totaling 46 assists while adding four kills and three blocks to help seal the match.
Hawaiʻi defeated BYU 27-25, 23-25, 25-17, and 25-18 to improve to 13-1 overall, snapping the Cougars’ nine-match winning streak in the process. BYU dropped to 13-3 with the loss.
The Rainbow Warriors will look to secure the series sweep in a rematch Friday night in Mānoa.
