In 1965 clarinetist Tommy Gwaltney opened Blues Alley which quickly became one of the finest Jazz clubs in the nation. The room originally was an old carriage house in the historic Georgetown district of Washington DC. It was a mid-size room with vintage décor and excellent acoustics. Tommy’s house band (The Blues Alley Cats) featured himself on clarinet and vibes supported by a dynamic rhythm section propelled by acoustic guitarist Steve Jordan along with John Philips on piano and renowned bassist Keter Betts. This group was the backing for many of the name Jazz musicians that were guest artists usually for an entire week.
This particular performance was a feature for the Blues Alley Cats. Tommy named his arrangement “The Old New Orleans Funeral Procession” and he provides the narration. The two part tune is better known as “Flee As a Bird” that segues into “Oh, Didn’t He Ramble”. Louis Armstrong often played this recalling his early New Orleans days. Note how Steve Jordan uses his damped guitar strings to simulate a snare drum as in a marching band; then listen to that swinging rhythm section as they head back from the cemetery. Tommy takes it to a climax with high note ending. I can tell you first hand that Blues Alley was the place to be in those days in DC. Enjoy!
