Coastal erosion and flooding have severely damaged beachfront homes along the Long Beach Peninsula in Southern California, as powerful surf and unusually high tides continued battering the shoreline on Sunday, October 11, 2026. By Monday morning, eight buildings covering approximately 13 addresses had been red-tagged, while another received a yellow tag. Sections of the century-old boardwalk and timber bulkhead have also been badly damaged.
The destruction follows earlier impacts from hurricanes Marie and Polo, which weakened coastal defenses before the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel brought another round of dangerous surf. Waves overtopped the damaged barrier, sending seawater into homes and streets and forcing evacuations along Seaside Walk.
In this video, we examine the damage to beachfront properties, the emergency sandbag operation, and why unusually elevated water levels made the coastline more vulnerable. We also explore the potential influence of El Niño-related ocean conditions and the Kelvin waves contributing to higher sea levels.
Long Beach has begun adding sand to widen the beach and strengthen its coastal defenses, with further dredging planned. However, a coastal flood advisory remains in effect through Wednesday, and officials warn that changing swell directions could threaten other exposed beaches. The Peninsula's mandatory evacuation is scheduled to end Tuesday if conditions allow, while inspections and emergency repairs continue.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
