With one exception, the main thoroughfares in Pullman National Historical Park were named for inventors—Fulton (now Langley Avenue), Stephenson (Champlain Avenue), Watt (St. Lawrence Avenue), Morse (Forrestville Avenue), and Pullman (Cottage Grove Avenue). The lone exception was Florence Boulevard (111th Street), named in honor of George Pullman’s daughter, Florence.
Pullman’s choice to name streets after inventors was no accident. It reflected his admiration for innovation, engineering, and technological progress—the very forces behind his success in railcar manufacturing. By honoring figures associated with steam power, communication, and transportation, Pullman aligned his town with the ideals of modernity, efficiency, and human ingenuity.
At the same time, the names were meant to inspire the people who lived there, subtly reminding residents that progress, improvement, and invention were values woven into daily life. Together, the street names suggest how Pullman viewed himself: a forward-thinking industrialist who believed progress could be planned, taught, and built into the fabric of a community.
