A very underrated and underappreciated Liszt in my opinion. Scherzo and March is critised by some people for its “lack of musicality” but it is one of the most important and intruiging Lizst Pieces ever composed. It sounds atonal at times, and the march and fugue is extoardinary pianistic writing. The melody sticks in my head. As such, this piece is crucial for any Liszt fan in line with his more famous pieces such as his sonata and transendental etudes as well as late Liszt.

This recording by Vladimir Horowitz, recorded live in Queens NYC in 1967 is one of the rarest Horowitz recordings on Youtube. It is a very unique performance due to the enormous duration difference compared to Jando’s performance - 3 minute difference. He skips many pages and bars at random times and on 8:30 he shifts back to a crescendo section in the first movement. I definitely wish he did adhere to the score way more but I can understand why he does these because there is repitiveness in the piece. It was very confusing trying to score and track his playing but I did manage to do it anyway. The score might not be 100% accurate but it is the most I can get.
Aside from that, his playing his magnificent and devilish here. He encapsulates the marching style very well. He has an immense powerful touch throughout the whole performance. Some notable parts are 7:33, 3:51. The Stretta final movement is played exeptionally well and his additional bass voicing is a great surprise. His clarity is impressive and he doesn’t make mistakes as far as I can hear. His improvisation at the ending is perfect to his style.
