With it being New Years Eve, it seemed kind of appropriate that the guitar build I would work on would be basically a guitar dressed in a tuxedo. Well…without a bow tie.
I was looking on eBay and I found an MJT Offset Body that has some VERY unique specifications.
1) The offset body is alder with a black nitro finish and double binding. 2) The guitar has a rounded neck pocket so it can take a Stratocaster neck…or a really nice USA made Fender Jazzmaster neck. 3) The body only weighed 4.5 lbs. 4) The control and pickup routings were all standard telecaster.
That sealed the deal for me. Talk about a unique guitar build. I have never seen an offset body with telecaster routings that also has double binding, and the neck pocket is rounded. The only issue I had with the MJT body is I wished it had been less relic’d or not relic’d at all.
I purchased the body and a few weeks later the body showed up at my shop. I am not sponsored by MJT, nor do I have an affiliate relationship with them.
A few weeks prior I had purchased a Fender American Professional II Jazzmaster neck to replace the neck on a Jazzmaster I had also purchased. I have become a rosewood snob. There are a lot of really good rosewood necks on the market for reasonable prices. If I can get a good rosewood neck for a guitar that has Pau Ferro or Indian Laurel I will. It was not until the Jazzmaster showed up that I discovered that the neck on the guitar was actually really nice and also had a painted headstock. I decided to leave the guitar as is and cover it in a video later.
The neck came with Fender Modern Sealed tuners. You know the ones. The tuners that Fender installs on most of their US made guitars. I think these tuners are some of the most underrated tuners ever. I used to be like everyone else and looking to upgrade them when I got a guitar with them installed. I finally discovered after trying so many different types and makes of tuners that they are really great utilitarian tuners. They just work and really well. They are so damn smooth to use and really make tuning an easy chore. They also hold a tuning.
The neck came from Stratosphere on their eBay store. I am not sponsored by Stratosphere, nor do I have an affiliate relationship with them.
The other major piece to the project that would make for a very sweet guitar is the pickups.
I had a set of Fender Custom Shop '51 Nocaster
Pickups. I like these pickups because their output is not as hot as other pickups, and they have a warmer tone to me.
The neckplate, control panel, and knobs are all Fender. The bridge is a non-logo Wilkinson bridge with Wilkinson compensated brass saddles.
The assembled guitar weighs7 lbs and 7 ozs or 3.37 kilos. The weight is within the comfortable parameters and there is no neck dive.
I really like the sounds that come out of this guitar. I sat and played this guitar for a while before recording the sample tracks for the video. It has some of the nicest and warm sounds, just makes me smile.
The only thing I may do is get a mint green or maybe even a reddish tortoise pickguard. Something more subdued. The pickguard on the guitar is great – it is just VERY white.
Before anyone asks – she is a keeper. I do not see folks being willing to pay even what I have into this guitar at the current market. I would have to sell her for about $1700 just to cover my costs.
Also, I would regret selling this guitar FOREVER because I would NEVER probably have an opportunity to replace the guitar with a guitar that looked the same and with the same specifications.
A few things to come on the channel. I am moving to a new shop. I also purchased a new camera mounting system that will provide me with different camera angles for the videos.
I am planning on doing Vlog style videos. I have not decided yet if they will be live or not. I will ask you for questions and then I will answer them with me on camera for the first time. I purchased a really cool guitar mounting system for the walls behind me in the new shop. It is what larger guitar stores use. I also have an LED lighting system that will have a computer-controlled light behind each guitar. Should look pretty cool on camera.
I REALLY appreciate the viewership in 2024 and really look forward to presenting new content in 2025. I truly hope we all have a good year. Happy New Year.
