Chilkat and Northern Geometric Ravenstail weaving are the prestigious traditional weaving practices of the Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, and other Northwest Coast peoples of Southeast Alaska, the Yukon, and British Columbia. The materials used for these textiles are traditionally mountain goat wool and cedar bark. Predating Chilkat, Northern Geometric Ravenstail weaving is twined in geometric patterns using black and white, with some yellow and blue. Using the same colors, Chilkat weaving’s complex techniques can create curvilinear and circular forms within the weave itself, allowing for Northwest Coast formline art to be compatible within the weaving techniques. In short, Ravenstail is geometric and Chilkat is figurative. Both Chilkat and Ravenstail are traditionally woven for ceremonial regalia including robes, dance tunics, aprons, leggings, vests, bags, and hats. A ceremonial blanket robe can take up to a year to weave.
