An extensive film on the history of Camp Koolaree featuring film shot almost entirely at the camp between 1939 and 1941. Camp Koolaree was established in 1931 around seven miles east of Nelson. The camp is owned and operated by the United Church of Canada. Former camp director Fred Robins (1904-2003) narrates the history with original archival film taken by himself and others.
The films begins with some 1939 footage of Len Stewart and Stewart McIntosh painting the camp boat at the Nelson boat house. The government boat is seen bringing in the pile driver to put in the piles for the new wharf. Bill Affleck and Reverend Bill Morris appear at the Nelson dock. A steam train appears at the camp. Bill Dimock (the future Sudbury Wolves hockey player) appears. There are three-legged races with Garth Barnes and Bob Morris. There is a comedy fashion show by the boys with Doug Winlaw of Nelson, Cammy McKenzie from Rossland and Jack Hand. Keith Jamieson and future tour director and high school principal Ernie Ball are seen making a string belt. Reverend Bill Selder of Ymir, Billy Horner and Dr William Endicott are identified by Fred. The SS Moyie is seen on the lake going past the camp. Joyce Maidment (sp?), Dr Leese, LC Robinson and Margaret Goddard are shown on a boat. A group are seen at the young person's camp. There is footage featuring Margaret McCloud, Joan Harrison, Carl Swanson of Nelson, Bert Green, Elsie Robinson and Mary Heddle. Bob Kay, Fred Robins and Alice Goddard appear in a play. The McDonald's Landing packing house used for cherries is briefly shown. Donny Kettlewell appears as does cook Mrs Stromme, Claude McIntosh of East Trail, Eileen Harris and we see wash day in the girl's camp in around 1941. Elva Kettlewell appears. Earl McGuire and Bruce McKenzie and shown.
Garth Barnes, Martin McCloud and Angus McCloud appear with the boat "Yoo Hoo" at McDonald's Landing. Amelia Hanna (later Oliver), Miss Jamieson from Rossland and Gordon Harris appear. Donald McDonald (later a judge in Kamloops) is shown departing a train around 1939/40. Harold Moon, Don McTear, Jimmy Douglas of Rossland and Robert "Pop" Smillie appear. Alistair McLeod of Trail, George Hoover and his brother, Jackie Gray, Clare Hew. Fred points out Chris Sorenson, Gordon Allen (former Minister) and Frank Wilby washing his socks.
We see Reverend Bill Selder, Russel Jones in 1940, Jackie Melville, Murray Harris, Billy Short, Dick Tyson, Alan Temple. Anglican Reverend William Silverwood of Nelson and Victoria. Then Fred names Helen Smith and Gordon Allen at the Young Person's Camp. There is a Nora Ellis study group who christened the "Yoo Hoo" boat. Also appearing are Amelia Hannah, Ruth Lundie (swimming instructor from Creston) and Don Kettlewell, Miss McClean from Porthill, Idaho, Phyllis Thompson, Peggy Sproule and Norah Ellis (Tadanac School), Betty Atkinson, Rosemary Fleming (later Hilliard) and Phyllis Thompson.
We see Jack Underwood at archery. There are views of the camp creek, Gordon Harris (later of Vancouver), Betty Atkinson (Balfour), Cam McKenzie (Rossland), Janet Doubt (later of Kamloops) and Jack Steed. The train with Trail kids appears. Douglas Whetmore (later Supreme Court Judge in Vancouver), Bill Affleck, Garth Barnes, Archie McTear, Jerry Geram. Then we see Herb Stobel (Baptist Minister), Ian McCloud (Presbyterian Minster), Ken Dimock and the "Attagirl" boat.
Fred next names Tony Cooper, Foster Hilliard (St. Paul's Church Minister, Nelson), Derek Groom (later off Seattle), Elva Kettlewell, "Pop" Smillie, Bob Morris, Bill Affleck, Gordon Whiteside, Alan Temple, Mrs Dobie, Bill Dobie (future federal minister). There are views of diving, potato peeling, archery, water can races and treasure hunting. Fred's Dad appears a few times, organiser Donald McDonald, Reverend Murray Campbell, Monty Robertson, Ruth Nelson, Jack Steed, Janet Doubt, Maureen McDonald (later Kasler), camp director Helen Vance (from Revelstoke), Sally Nelson and Eileen Harris from Trail.
We see camp leader Fronia Schneider (later Affleck) from Kimberley. Eileen McDonald, Wendy Endicott, Bob McCloud, Mrs Endicott, Jackie Grey (later of Christina Lake), singer Don Brown, Martin McCloud, Frank Wilby, Dennie Goddard, Jack Underwood, Moen boys and a MacNaughton boy. There are views of a bird's nest, Dick Tyson, Ralph Stenson, Mrs Lyons and Ken Dimock.
The film shows the "Atbara" sign. Francis Moran, Gordon Harris, Jack Steed, Gilbert Kay, Gord Nelson, Dick Tyson, Gill Kay, Jerry Geram and Bob McIntosh. Re-roofing the lodge with Jim Little and Bill Moore is shown on a hike, Ken Dimock in a group at the lodge, Ernie Ball and Fred Robins, "Pop" Smillie, Bob Gray. Also appearing is Merv Rowlands and his cabins. Alice Gray, Frances Moran, Lois Robins, Donny Crouse, Tiger Milburn, Floyd Irwin. Finally there is a dedication to those campers lost in the Second World War.
