Last night, masked gangs forced some people to flee their homes, and multiple cars and homes were set alight in the disorder after a knife attack in the north of the city on Monday.

Sir Keir has said the disorder in Belfast was “shocking and completely unacceptable”, adding: “It is clear that people were targeted last night because of their background and I will not tolerate it.”

The disorder comes after a brutal knife attack that rocked Belfast, with graphic video of the incident going viral on social media. A 30-year-old Sudanese man who was given leave to remain in the UK until 2028 was charged with attempted murder and will appear in court today.

Kemi Badenoch said she was “absolutely horrified” by the attack in Belfast. She said: “I’m absolutely horrified. It is a horrific incident.”

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said leave-to-remain status, held by the suspect, is handed out “like Smarties” and called the assault "shocking, barbaric, ghastly".
