Hey guys! It's Jennifer... experienced graphic designer, beginner photographer.... And today I'm going to explain something that I had trouble understanding at first... the F Stop Definition. (aka: aperture settings, aperature scale)

Shutter Speed Matters in Photography -
Learning about F-stops (or aperture as it's also known) can make a lot of difference in how your photos turn out... so I'm going to give you my very basic f stop definition and then I am going to recommend TWO fantastic resources for you to really dive into the advanced strategies of f stops and their correct settings if you want to really shorten your learning curve.

First, the F Stop definition... this refers to the diameter of the opening in your lens that is letting light into your camera. Think of it like your pupil that controls how much light enters your eye... the brighter your surroundings, the smaller your pupil gets to control all that light coming in... the lower the light in your surroundings, your pupil gets larger to let in as much light as possible.

In addition to controlling how much light enters the camera, the correct calculation and changing the f stop camera settings can also change the image's depth of field.

Now the way I learn best is through seeing examples... so what you are seeing here are examples of how the f-stops can affect your finished photos, so you see that all of those confusing numbers on the f stop scale can really have a dramatic affect on the finished product.

Hope that f stop definition gave you some clarity. Now I want to share with you the TWO resources I said I would give you... and these are tools that you can use to get better as a photographer.

The second resource is for those people who are beginning photographers but are looking for a way to learn more about the fundamentals of photography in an entertaining and fun way... and a lot more in-depth on the f stop definition.

I realize some of you just came here to learn the f stop definition and understanding it can take some time... but if you want to get moving fast, a tutorial like Jared's can really shorten your learning curve... especially if you are a visual learner like I am...
