Parshas Beshalach features one of the greatest miracles in Jewish history, the splitting of the sea. But something is surprising: the Torah never calls it Krias Yam Suf. Instead, the Torah uses the term Bekias HaYam while Chazal consistently refer to it as Krias Yam Suf. Why the switch? What does that change in language reveal about the relationship between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael?
In this Parsha Schmooze, Rabbi Rosman explores how Hashem describes the miracle as something incredibly difficult, a true “breaking apart,” highlighting how deserving the Jewish people were of such a miracle. But we, in turn, describe it as something “easy” for Hashem, like a simple tearing, emphasizing His greatness instead of our own.
This same dynamic appears throughout Chumash, in the way we refer to Chag HaMatzos vs. Chag HaPesach, in the order of Mishkan and Shabbos, and even in the idea of Hashem’s tefillin and our tefillin. Each side highlights the greatness of the other, which is the foundation of every healthy relationship.
Rabbi Rosman then brings this idea into daily life and the beis midrash: real growth doesn’t happen only by building yourself, but by building others, complimenting, encouraging, and creating an environment where everyone helps each other succeed. True confidence allows you to lift others up without feeling threatened.
This is not only a Torah idea. It is essential training for friendships, chavrusas, and future marriages:
It’s not about me. It’s about us.
