They were friends before anyone noticed how dangerous that was.

Back in their first year, the school’s future valedictorian and the grunge artist who never followed rules somehow found each other. One lived under the weight of expectations—perfect grades, perfect future, perfect composure. The other lived in paint splatters and unfinished thoughts, drawing what he felt instead of explaining it. They shared music, skipped buses, stayed late after school for no real reason except that it felt easier to breathe together.

Then something broke.

By junior year, they’re strangers with shared history. The golden boy has sharpened himself into something untouchable, a symbol of success everyone projects onto. The artist has retreated into his work, known for his talent and his volatility, refusing to explain himself to anyone. They pass in hallways without speaking, pretending the past doesn’t still sit between them like a held breath.

Until the school traps them together.

A single mistake forces them together, facing each other for the first time in years.
Forced proximity drags old familiarity back to the surface: the way they still know each other’s tells, the way silence feels charged instead of empty, the way being close feels both wrong and inevitable.

As rivals, they clash constantly. Every argument is too personal. Every look lingers too long. The competition—for recognition, scholarships, escape—becomes a stand-in for something neither wants to admit: how much the other still matters. Paint stains pristine uniforms. Sketches start to look like memories. Compliments sound like accusations. Anger feels uncomfortably close to longing.

Beneath it all is fear.

Fear of ruining futures.
Fear of wanting something that doesn’t fit the roles they’ve been assigned. The golden boy is terrified of becoming less than perfect.

And yet, both are afraid that whatever they feel for each other could cost them everything they’re supposed to become.

Forced to confront the truth behind their fallout, they must decide whether it’s safer to keep each other at a distance—or risk breaking expectations, reputations, and carefully constructed selves for a connection that refuses to stay buried.
