Artist Karel Doing was invited to the laboratory of researcher Julian Ma at the St. George University of London as part of the research project Newcotiana.
In Newcotiana the goal was to apply New Plant Breeding Technologies to redesign the metabolism in tobacco plants in order to no longer use them for the production of cancer-causing cigarettes, but instead to have tobacco plants produce pharmaceuticals, vaccines and cosmetic products to support human health and well-being. Karel developed a phytography method to use tobacco plants, in particular its plant sap, to expose and develop photographic images (instead of photo-chemical emulsions) showing that this plant could be used for unexpected purposes.
