Canoeing and exploring along the Peace River in central Florida where long ago this area was completely covered under the ocean. Besides enjoying the beautiful nature and seeing the wildlife here, it's incredible to see evidence from the prehistoric past as well from those distant times. On this adventure we found some ancient shark teeth. Blake presented some finds from his past adventures as well along the river such as megalodon teeth and other fossils. Other finds you may see include the fossilized remnants of the mastodon, mammoth, camel, horse, bison, whales, and alligators, in addition to a host of other creatures. Hundreds of thousands and millions of years ago this place was much different. To travel along the river feels like taking a trip into the prehistoric times of this wild place. Thankfully a lot of these places in this part of Florida today are preserved for us to experience and learn about the history. The Peace River cuts through 100-plus miles of an area known as Bone Valley, and as it flows, the sediment from millions of years ago erodes, freeing some of those fragments of prehistoric millennia. Although it’s nourished by springs, the Peace is primarily a blackwater river. Its waters are a dark brew of leaf detritus, organic acids and tannin, distilled from the peaty soils of the wetlands and forests through which it flows. "When the early Spanish explorers invaded the peninsula, they were blinded by a lust for gold, and many a misguided conquistador died at the wrong end of an arrow. Still, they were remarkably adept at choosing just the right name for the places they discovered. It was Ponce de Leon, for example, who christened our state pascua de florida, or “feast of flowers.” Shortly thereafter — sometime in the early 1500s — an unknown Spanish cartographer was updating a map of the New World. Dipping his quill in a vial of iron ink, he sketched a meandering river in a previously uncharted region. Like all cartography, it was part accurate representation, part educated guess. Perhaps out of wishful thinking, he decided to call it Rio de la Paz, or the “Peace River.” History of Peace River: https://www4.swfwmd.state.fl.us/peace...
