Port de Bras are used in every combination in class and repertoire for performance. Using your arms well and shaping the arms and hands correctly can greatly improve a dancer's lines.


If you are just starting out and new to ballet, Port de Bras and Arm Positions will probably feel very difficult, hard to coordinate, and sometimes overwhelming. I hear this a lot from my beginners and adult students. But even at an advanced or professional level, port de bras is something to improve on every day.

Working correctly through elbows, wrists, and hands, while maintaining the correct rotation in the upper and lower arm, and not letting the shapes become too flimsy or stiff, is a lot to think about!


Port de Bras and Arm Positions are something a dancer must work to improve throughout their entire career. There is no such thing as perfect for a ballerina, just the continual striving for perfection. Art doesn't have an arrival point, it's all about the process and journey. That's why we take class every single day, there's always more growth to discover!
