Iranshahr Among Sasanians: The Construction and Representation of an Idea and a Culture

The Sasanians were responsible for the creation of which is called Iranshahr, or the "Realm of the Iranians." But with this realm or empire of the Iranians came a history, religion(s) and ideology. The talk will cover the way in which the idea of Iran was constructed, followed by the writing of a history of the Iranians (Khoday-nama). Also, Sasanian religion, specifically Zoroastrianism which became established as a confessional religion with a text (the Avesta) which recounted Iranian beliefs and tradition will be discussed. Finally, the idea of a Persianate Culture (Frahang) will also be demonstrated from texts and the material culture.
