, Viktor Bryzgin; born 22 August 1962 in Voroshilovgrad is a former Soviet athlete, winner of gold medal in 4 × 100 m relay at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
Career
Viktor Bryzhin trained at Dynamo in Voroshilovgrad. He made his debut in the international championships at the first World Championships, where he reached to the quarterfinal of 100 m and won a bronze as a member of Soviet 4 × 100 m relay team. At the 1986 European Championships, Bryzhin was last in the final of 100 m, but won the gold in 4 × 100 m.
At the 1987 World Championships, Bryzhin finished fifth in 100 m and was second in 4 × 100 m relay. At the Seoul Olympics, Bryzhin ran the opening leg in the Soviet 4 × 100 m relay team, which, in absence of United States won the gold medal. In 1988 he was awarded the title Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR.[1] Bryzhin made his last appearance in the international athletics scene at the 1991 World Championships, where he finished seventh with the Soviet 4 × 100 m relay team.
His wife Olha Bryzhina (née Vladykina) was also a notable athlete, winner of two gold medals at the 1988 Olympics. Together they have two daughters Yelizaveta Bryzhina and Anastasiia Bryzgina[ who are also a successful track and field athletes (competing for Ukraine)
He became the champion of the USSR five times:
100 m 1986 (10.28 s)
60 m (indoor) 1983 (6.69 s), 1986 (6.66 s), 1987 (6.60 s) and 1991 (6.64 s)
At the 1987 World Championships in Athletics in Rome, he reached the 100-meter final and finished fifth with a time of 10.25 seconds. To win a medal, he would have to be twelve hundredths of a second faster (Car Lewis broke the world record in 9.93 seconds). .
As a member of the Soviet 4 x 100 meters relay team, he had medal successes:
Gold at the 1986 European Championships in Stuttgart in 38.29 s ahead of East Germany (silver in 38.64 s) and Great Britain (bronze in 38.71 s) (team: Alexander Yevgenyev, Nikolai Yushmanov, Vladimir Muravyov and as finalist Bryshin)
Gold at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul in 38.19 s ahead of Great Britain (silver in 38.28 s) and France (bronze in 38.40 s) (team: Bryshin as starting runner, Vladimir Krylov, Vladimir Muraviov and Vitaly Savin)
Silver at the World Championships in Rome in 38.02 s behind the USA (gold in 37.90 s) and ahead of Jamaica (bronze in 38.41 s) (team: Alexander Yevgenyev, Bryshin in second place, Vladimir Muraviov and Vladimir Krylov)
His wife Olha Vladykina-Bryshina is the 1988 Olympic champion in the 400 meters. Their daughters Jelysaveta Bryshina and Anastassija Bryshina are also successful sprinters.
