Nestled in a rugged volcanic landscape are the Salinas de Janubio salt flats – our first stop on a day exploring near to our stay in Playa Blanca.. Dating back to the 19th century these salt flats are the largest in the Canary Islands and are a remarkable example of traditional salt production that remains in use today.
Next we visit Yaiza one of the best-preserved villages in Lanzarote, with traditional architecture that stands out amid lava fields and volcanic gardens. We visit the Aloe Vera museum to find about more about the use of this remarkable cactus plant and then take a walk into the village.
Our final stop is El Golfo where we take the walkway to the hidden green lagoon which is formed in a crater of an old volcano and owes its colour to a type of algea that grows there. We then walk through the village which is known for its fishing and enjoy a wonderful fish meal in one of its restaurants.
