STORYLINE
An Indian official on Saturday said one of the captured assailants who took part in the attacks in Mumbai was from Pakistan.
Maharashtra state Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said in a news briefing in Mumbai on Saturday that "the captured terrorist was Pakistani."
"The other people with him, their nationality is still under investigation."
A previously unknown Muslim group with a name suggesting origins inside India claimed responsibility for the attack, but Indian officials said the sole surviving gunman was from Pakistan and pointed a finger of blame at their neighbour and rival.
Deshmukh's deputy, R.R. Patil, also identified the gunman as a Pakistani national, Mohammad Ajmal Qasam.
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani insisted his country was not involved.
His government was initially sending an intelligence official to assist in the probe but on Saturday withdrew the offer, damaging efforts to head off a crisis between the nuclear-armed rivals.
The gunmen had sophisticated equipment and used GPS, mobile and satellite phones to communicate Patil said.
During the briefing Deshmukh also confirmed the numbers and nationalities of foreigners killed in the attacks - they included Americans, Germans, Canadians, Israelis and nationals from Britain, Italy, Japan, China, Thailand, Australia and Singapore.
The 60-hour rampage which killed at least 195 people across India's financial capital ended on Saturday when commandos killed the last three gunmen inside the Taj Mahal Hotel while it was engulfed in flames.
Some 295 people were also wounded in the violence that started when heavily armed assailants attacked 10 sites across Mumbai on Wednesday night.
At least 20 soldiers and police were among the dead.
