India has achieved a landmark milestone in its aerospace and defence manufacturing journey
with the successful maiden test flight of the first Made in India C295 military transport aircraft on
June 11, 2026. Manufactured at the Tata-Airbus facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, this achievement
marks the first time a private-sector company in India has produced a military aircraft of this
scale, making it a significant moment in the country's defence industrial history.
The C295 is a versatile military transport aircraft designed to carry troops, equipment, medical
supplies, and humanitarian aid. It can transport up to 70 soldiers and operate from short and
semi-prepared runways, making it highly effective in remote border regions, mountainous
terrains, island territories, and disaster-hit areas. Beyond military operations, the aircraft will play
a crucial role during emergencies such as floods, earthquakes, cyclones, and rescue missions
by enabling the rapid movement of relief materials and personnel.
The C295 program is also a major boost to the Government of India's Make in India and
Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Under the 2021 agreement signed for 56 aircraft for the Indian
Air Force, 16 aircraft are being delivered from Spain, while the remaining 40 are being
manufactured in India. The project is helping develop a domestic aerospace ecosystem by
creating skilled jobs, strengthening supply chains, and enabling Indian companies to participate
in the production of advanced aircraft components.
More importantly, this achievement reflects India's transformation from being largely dependent
on imports for sophisticated defence platforms to becoming a nation capable of manufacturing
advanced military aircraft on its own soil. It is a step towards greater technological self-reliance,
stronger national security, and a more competitive Indian aerospace industry.
