In 2015, Sweden welcomed approximately 60.000 refugees from the Middle East. They can practice their religion freely. Jan joins a large group of Swedish muslims as they gather in a park in Malmö for a joint prayer.

Many refugees live in the rather rural areas of Sweden. Jan speaks with Shahla, an Iraqi Kurdish interpreter who teaches in the village Björnhammaren, where only refugee families live. He also residents like Alaa, a Syrian refugee with two wifes and nine children.

Mustafa Panshiri is a man with a mission. He visits minor refugees and explains what it means to live in a secular democracy like Sweden. As he fled from Afghanistan to Sweden as a young boy himself, he knows what the young Muslims are going through and how hard the transition can be.

In the neighbouring Denmark, the atmosphere is quiet different. Naser Khader is a Danish parliamentarian with Syrian roots. Since the Mohammed cartoon controversy, he gets permanent protection. So does Kurt Westergaard, the artist of the infamous Mohammed cartoon.

The Wakf Mosque in Copenhagen organizes an open door day annually and tries to remove the distrust of the Danish people. He thinks that the cartoon controversy is just as much about respecting Islam as it is about freedom of expression.
