《地藏菩薩本願經》中解說地藏菩薩過去生中，曾為婆羅門女、光目女、小國國王等身，因發弘大誓願，經無數阿僧祇劫修持，履行祂的誓願，度儘地獄道的眾生。而這一則地藏菩薩前身的故事 光目女的發願 則是地藏菩薩成道前的故事。此故事記載在《地藏菩薩本願經》中，由加拿大大悲菩提寺 妙淨法師以英文開示
