Trump targets institutional investors in housing market crackdown, Ohio has not

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at curbing the acquisition of single-family homes by institutional investors, a move intended to increase housing affordability in the U.S.

The order directs the Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission, and Treasury Department to establish guidelines to prevent corporate investors from buying homes, allowing individuals to have priority access to foreclosed properties.

Trump initially announced his intentions on Truth Social, stating, "I am immediately taking steps to ban large institutional investors from buying more single-family homes... as the American dream is increasingly out of reach for far too many people."

The issue has been contentious, with some Republican support wavering over the years. Before becoming vice president, U.S. Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, expressed concerns about institutional investors, saying, "They have access to lower interest rates. They have access to cheaper money and they completely crowd out the availability for homes for people who want to just buy a piece of their community."
