Constitution of India — Mentioned or Not? | Episode 13 | UPSC Polity Series
How well do you actually know the Constitution of India?
In this series, we examine the exact language of the Constitution and ask whether a word, phrase, concept or sentence is actually mentioned in it. If it is mentioned, where exactly does it appear?
Many commonly used constitutional terms—such as Federalism, Rule of Law, Freedom of Press, Single Citizenship, Basic Structure and Judicial Review—may be constitutionally important even when they are not literally written in the Constitution.
This series will help you understand:
Which words and phrases are explicitly mentioned in the Constitution
Which concepts are constitutionally implied but not expressly stated
The exact Article, Part, Schedule or Preamble reference
The distinction between constitutional wording and common terminology
Concepts developed through Supreme Court judgments
The relevance of these distinctions for UPSC Prelims and Mains
The objective is simple: to read the Constitution carefully and understand exactly what it says—and what it does not say.
In this episode:
Preventive Detention
Punitive Detention
Advisory Board
Magistrate Within 24 Hours
National Security Act
Enemy Alien
For every phrase, we will ask:
MENTIONED or NOT MENTIONED?
If mentioned, where exactly? If not mentioned, where does the concept come from?
This episode focuses mainly on Articles 22 and 23, the constitutional safeguards relating to arrest and detention, the distinction between preventive and punitive detention, the role of the Advisory Board, and the special treatment of enemy aliens.
It also examines whether terms such as “National Security Act” and “enemy alien” are expressly mentioned in the Constitution or derive from ordinary legislation and constitutional provisions.
The series is useful for UPSC Civil Services Examination, State PSCs and other competitive examinations.
Topics covered across the series include:
Preamble | Citizenship | Fundamental Rights | Directive Principles | Fundamental Duties | Parliament | President | Prime Minister | Supreme Court | High Courts | Federalism | Emergency Provisions | Constitutional Bodies | Schedules | Constitutional Amendments
For UPSC aspirants, the central distinction is between:
“What the Constitution says” and “What we commonly say about the Constitution.”
