The IMSA GTO RX-7 (The Peak of Factory Racing)
This wasn't just an RX-7 with a widebody; it was a tube-frame silhouette racer that shared almost nothing with the road car.
It featured the 13J four-rotor engine, a direct relative of the 26B found in the legendary 787B Le Mans winner. It produced upwards of 600 hp naturally aspirated and screamed to 9,000 RPM.
Designed by Lee Dykstra, the "kit" was a massive carbon-fiber widebody with a functional venturi tunnel floor and a giant rear wing, making it look like a wide-arched spaceship.
In 1991, it was so dominant that it won the IMSA GTO Manufacturer's Championship, outperforming massive V8 Mercury Cougars and twin-turbo Nissan 300ZXs.
