Real Footage Tour the Turtle Hospital Unbelievable Recoveries of Injured Sea Turtles!
The video provides a tour of some outdoor tanks at The Turtle Hospital in the Florida Keys, showcasing several juvenile sea turtles undergoing rehabilitation.
Bali: A juvenile green sea turtle being treated for cold stunning and fibropapillomatosis (FP tumors). It's seen actively using a PVC environmental enrichment device to scratch its shell.
Haven: Another juvenile green sea turtle rescued locally in February, also being treated for FP. The narrator highlights visible tumors and shows a picture of Haven upon arrival with severe tumors, including on its eyes. Haven has undergone multiple surgeries, including specialized eye surgery, and is looking much better.
Cold Stun Event: The narrator mentions the hospital received 56 cold-stunned turtles over the winter (20 from New England, 36 from other parts of Florida). Cold stunning is explained as a type of hypothermia affecting sea turtles when water temperature drops below 50°F, slowing their metabolism and potentially leading to secondary issues like pneumonia and bone infections (osteomyelitis).
Other Turtles: Several other turtles are briefly shown or mentioned:
Bimini & Isla: Juvenile greens treated for cold stunning and FP (Isla also had a boat strike).
Jenga: A critical cold-stunned turtle, initially challenging to feed but now eating. Named after a board game (part of a naming theme).
Danny: Rescued locally after entanglement, also had FP, but is now tumor-free and nearing release.
Lawnmower, Radio, Fryer, Toaster, Shredder: Juvenile greens transferred in January, named after appliances.
Lefty: Juvenile green missing part of its right flipper and left eye (due to tumors), but swims well.
Pocono: Seen splashing actively.
Manta: The last remaining juvenile Kemp's Ridley from the cold-stun transfers. Critically ill with severe osteomyelitis (bone infection) and limited use of its front left flipper. Needs prayers.
Jack: Treated for entanglement and FP, has been there over a year, recently had eye tumor surgery, and still has a mild tumor load. Also needs prayers.
Tater & Tot: Juvenile Loggerheads who are educational animals, growing fast and nearing the size for release back to the ocean (45cm carapace length).
Release Announcement: Oliver, a juvenile green sea turtle, is scheduled for a public release on the upcoming Saturday at 12:00 PM from Sombrero Beach in Marathon.
Enrichment & Support: The use of PVC structures as environmental enrichment (for scratching/hiding) is highlighted. Viewers are encouraged to support the hospital, potentially through their online store.
