Dusty May reflects on Michigan Wolverines 75-72 win over Nebraska Cornhuskers: “We were determined”
Michigan Wolverines head coach Dusty May reflected on a 75-72 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a postgame press conference at the Crisler Center on Tuesday. “We were determined to find a way.” No. 3 Michigan beat previously undefeated No. 5 Nebraska, moving to 19-1 and 9-1 in Big Ten. The Wolverines stormed back in the second half and pulled off a thrilling victory to vault to the top of the Big Ten standings. Nebraska jumped out to a quick start, knocking down back to back 3-pointers in the early minutes to take an 8-3 lead. However, Michigan answered as Morez Johnson Jr. put up 10 points in the first seven minutes to cut the deficit to 15-14. The Wolverines started to find a rhythm offensively but just couldn’t stop Jamarques Lawrence early on as the Nebraska guard scored 16 points – including four 3-pointers – in the first 10 minutes to help the Cornhuskers build a 31-20 lead. Michigan regained momentum as Trey McKenney hit a pair of 3-pointers, followed by Nimari Burnett grabbing a steal and finishing an and-1 to trim the deficit to 44-42. Nebraska once again responded though, putting together a 6-0 run. The back-and-forth first half finished with Elliot Cadeau finding Aday Mara for a buzzer-beating layup, but Nebraska held a 50-48 lead at halftime. Nebraska shot 10-for-19 from 3-point range in the half, which was the biggest difference maker. Michigan had an advantage in points in the paint (28-16), points off turnovers (10-7) and rebounds (13-9), but the Cornhuskers’ incredible perimeter shooting and ability to force turnovers allowed them to take a lead into the locker room. Both teams struggled offensively to start the second half – combining for just six points in the first four minutes as Nebraska held a 54-50 lead at the first media timeout. Michigan committed five turnovers in the first five minutes of the half. Michigan tried to seize momentum as Yaxel Lendeborg scored four straight points, but Pryce Sandfort knocked down a 3-pointer to beat the shot clock buzzer and silence the crowd – giving the Cornhuskers a 63-54 lead with 11:25 remaining. The Wolverines continued to fight back though, going on a 13-6 run as Will Tschetter made a 3-pointer, a pair of free throws and a putback layup, followed by Lendeborg hitting two free throws to cut the deficit to 70-69 with just 3:36 to go. Just moments later, Cadeau connected on a game-tying free throw to tie it 72-72 with 2:16 left. It appeared Nebraska was going to regain the lead with a fastbreak layup, but McKenney got back on defense and came up with a clutch steal. On the ensuing possession, McKenney finished a go-ahead layup to give the Wolverines their first lead of the half (74-72) with just 1:04 to go. Nebraska had multiple chances at a game-tying shot in the final seconds but came up empty. The Wolverines will hit the road to take on the No. 7 Michigan State Spartans with an opportunity to extend the 5-game win streak and remain atop the Big Ten. Tip off between the in-state rivals is slated for Friday at 8:00 PM on FOX.
