Natural Falls State Park is in Delaware County, Oklahoma, an area within the Ozark Uplift area of northeastern Oklahoma. The 77-foot waterfall is composed primarily of chert and limestone. The area of land is where the proud Cherokee Nation was relocated, no thanks to the Indian Removal Act of 1838. The Cherokee found that the chert in the area was good for making arrowheads and other items. During the American Civil War, several battles were fought along the Arkansas and Indian Territory borders.
In 1974, the movie, Where the Red Fern Grows was filmed in the park. Signs ask all visitors to stay on the boardwalk as protected salamanders and ferns live in the basin of the falls. Please obey all state and park regulations and be a friend of nature. What you bring in, be sure you take with you when you leave!
